Step 1: Understand What an Essence Is
An essence is typically a lightweight skincare product designed to provide hydration and prepare the skin for subsequent products. Many essences have a watery or slightly thicker texture and are formulated with ingredients that help the skin feel soft, comfortable, and hydrated.
Essences are generally considered an optional step. A basic skincare routine does not necessarily require one.
Step 2: Understand What a Serum Is
A serum is usually formulated to target a particular skincare concern or provide a specific benefit. Depending on the formula, serums may contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid for hydration, niacinamide for supporting an even-looking complexion, or vitamin C for antioxidant support.
Serums often have a more concentrated formulation than essences, although the exact concentration varies between products.
Step 3: Compare Essence and Serum
The main difference is their purpose and formulation. Essences are commonly focused on hydration and preparing the skin for other products, while serums are often designed to address more specific skincare goals.
Essences are usually lighter and more watery, while serums can range from watery to gel-like or slightly thicker textures. However, there is no universal rule, and products can overlap in their ingredients and benefits.
You do not necessarily need both. If you prefer a simple routine, choosing one suitable product may be enough.
Step 4: Decide Which One You Need
Choose an essence if you mainly want an additional lightweight hydration step. Consider a serum if you have a specific skincare goal and want a product formulated around that goal.
If you decide to use both, a common routine is to apply the essence after cleansing and toner, followed by serum and moisturizer. Always follow the instructions provided with your individual products.
